Bishop, California (AP) — Strong wind on Monday caught a wildfire in an area far east of California, evacuating hundreds of houses.
The silver fire broke out on Sunday afternoon along the 6th in the Inyo area, which was about 5 miles (8 kilometers) northeast of Bishop in Owens Valley.
Until Monday morning, according to the Ministry of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Kal fire, it had grown to about 2 square miles (5 square kilometers). There was no restraint.
Kloy Castillo, a firefighter spokesman, said 65 miles per hour (104 kilograms) kept limited flights by helicopters and air tankers on the ground.
“The backgrounds are very irregular,” he said. “They push the north for a minute, and another minute they will go east.”
The evacuation was ordered to have about 800 households in small communities of law, Chalfant and the Springs of Mountains near the border of Nevada.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
