Northern Ireland coach Tanya Okstobi says she’s “retually excited” for the 16-year-old goalkeeper, Abi Smith in his squad for the next Nations League against Poland and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Smith is first named in the squad for the first time after joining Manchester City in March with a two-year scholarship by the Crusaders.
The teenager was brought to training with the squad last month, but now it is officially part of the panel after being admired by the NI president.
Northern Ireland is second in Group B1, four points behind the table poles ahead of the final pairs.
On Friday, May 30, they play the role of the leaders of the unloving groups in Sevio in Belfast and then travel to Zinca to face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday.
“Abbi came in and was without problems in connection with the intensity of training, within the group and its surroundings, and the maturity he had shown,” Okstobi said.
“There is no doubt that his talent is really interesting. When we look at the young players who come in, are they ready for that high environment?”
Okstobi has included other young players in recent squads, including Aime Ker, Abi Sutlov, Kerry Halliday and Kask Weer.
“They are all really playing well and adding a lot. They add a lot of quality to our group,” he said.
“We know their ability is their ability, but from a cultural and emotional point of view, are they ready?
“Our job is to support them and Abi was really impressed in this field. We are really happy to know how to go in a complete camp.
