Boxing remains an Olympic sport, after the International Olympic Committee unanimously voted to participate in the 2028 Los Angeles.
The sport was not part of the program for the next Olympics when the schedule was first announced in
But last month, the IOC donated a temporary introduction to the world boxing as the World Sports Agency before it voted to participate in a regular session in Greece.
“Thank you for satisfaction with the boxing. We can expect a big boxing tournament,” IOC chief Thomas Bach said.
Boxing has been in all Olympics since 1904, except in 1912, but IOC has performed the sport in its last two games after the International Boxing Association (IBA) was suspended in
The Russian-led IBA was then deprived of its position in June 2023 for not implementing reforms.
IOC and IBA had collided last year’s Olympics in Paris over the participation of two boxers, Iman Khalif and Lynn Yu-Tina in Algeria.
IBA banned warriors in the 2023 World Championships and said they had failed in gender eligibility tests, but IOC allowed them to compete and both won the gold medal in their weight classes.
The world boxing was formed in April 2023 and now has 84 members across five continents, including the UK.
“This is a very good day for boxers, boxers and all those related to our sport at all levels around the world,” said Boris van der Vorst, president of the world.
“The world’s boxing understands that they are part of the Olympic Games and it is not a right and we have decided to be a reliable partner that will adhere to the values of the Olympic movement.
Only those athletes whose national federations are members of the world boxing can participate in Los Angeles until the 2028 Olympics begins.
The dates of refining have not yet been confirmed.
