When Warton was elected for the Euro 2024 Euro squad, the club’s manager Gareth Southgate said the midfielder was the kind of player the three lions had lost “for seven or eight years” and praised the advanced game.

“(That) just the way I play football,” Warton said. “When I was younger I used to play like more than 10 – more than one midfielder – so I might know how to play that post.

But if I get the ball and the striker is an option, I will go to him because he is the goal he scores.

“If I can move it forward for a player who can be effective, score, create opportunities, get an assist, I don’t see why I shouldn’t move to them,” he said.

“I don’t drible out of five people and put it at the top, that’s not just my game.

Former Blackburn Rovers midfielder has been in the squad of England Under-21 for the recent international holidays, but with New England coach Thomas Tuchel under the control of the top player, who has been a visitor to Selturst Park to see the palace.

“Obviously you have a relationship with the top team. Well, try to leave an impact and train with the best players in the world,” Warton said.

“He spoke to me more about how he came back from injury and things like them. It was good to be there, but now I’m just focusing on playing and I’ll help the team.
