NC — Norfolk Stat Robert Jones has a monster chip on his shoulder that moves to the first round of the NCAA top of Florida on Friday.
Clearly feels that his team has something to prove.
Spartacus players, 16th of whom are 16th, are 281/2, 281-2, 2013 with Giterters, the Southeast Conference champion.
“I know Florida really, really good, and they are running a great program, they have got great players, but is it so bad that the spread of the point is like that?” Jones said. “I’m a little angry, as I said, I’m a little more about something and I’m playing better when I get angry.
“I think the players are playing better when they get angry.
The champions of the Eastern Central Sports Conference have won 20 games in the past four years, the third NCAA tournament in the last five games. Spartacus have some history in the NCAA championship, in 2012 in Missouri, 10th of the world before they lost, by chance, in the next round with 84-50 Florida.
Jones hopes to have a better outcome this time against the game.
“We’re trying to show that it’s more than just meacs, more than HBCus, whatever it is,” Jones said. “We are trying to show that we are really one of the best teams in the country. So I think there is a different level of focus and density we bring.
“There is no one in the dress room,” Jones said.
Jones, who calls himself a New York City boy, seems to be planning to prove the wrong people.
“There are suspected people in the world because people think that, oh, he only does in MAC or only at HBCU, and that’s a cursed lie,” Jones said. “We’re doing all this across the country, you’ve lost to some of your favorite coaches to Norfolk Statit. That’s just another opportunity to go out there with a chick on our shoulders, or my shoulder, and show the world different from what they think.
