Brussels (Reuters) – The European Commission said Tuesday it would propose to expand the role of the European Union Law Cooperation Agency for Euroal and increase data access to data as part of a strategy to improve the internal security of the block.
In the face of geopolitical obstacles, mixed threats and more digital crimes, Europe is looking at better ways to combat organized crimes, improving police and better fighting terrorism.
In its new strategy, the commission called for more resources for the implementation of law and investment in strong EU institutions.
“We are going to make the europolis a police agency really operational,” the European Commission’s chief executive chief, who is in charge of security, told Reuters.
“Of course, the eurool needs more resources,” he said, adding that the agency’s current authority does not include threats and mixing and in the future europols can help member states to combat more types of border crimes.
The commission plans to approve a bill to replace the europolis in 2026, according to the new strategy.
Virkunen also said the commission proposes to strengthen the Frontex Border Agency and reform the Eurogsist Criminal Criminal Authority, and help member states to provide important physical and digital infrastructure.
“The security forces are at the forefront of everything,” he said.
In its strategy, the commission said it would present a “regional access to legal access to the law enforcement”.
Virkunen said police and law enforcement agencies do not have the necessary tools for the digital era.
“But of course it is very important to have a proper balance here, when it comes to features and then to access information,” he said.
